Frequently Asked Questions about our Maths and English Tuition Programmes at Kip McGrath Education Centre Bexleyheath
What subjects do you teach?
We help students with reading, writing, spelling, comprehension, English and all areas of maths including number and calculations, problem solving, time, money and algebra. We also offer 11+ tuition to help pupils with their secondary selection tests.
What ages do you teach?
The majority of pupils we teach are between 6 and 16 years old.
Do you tutor exam preparation for selective school entrance?
We do exam preparation for selective school entrance exams. We tutor for the 11+ exams, exploring appropriate exam technique and strategies in the maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers as well as the creative writing element that some schools assess. It is important that you contact us well before the exams to give your child the best chance of success.
How long will my child need to attend?
Every child is different and every problem is different. After the initial assessment, we will discuss with you how your child has performed and use this to decide how best to help your child to progress. After each session, your child’s tutor will provide parental feedback that will allow you to follow their progression and achievements. We can implement any further assessments upon request. There is no obligation or contract to attend for any period of time. All we ask is that you give us 2 weeks term time notice should you no longer require your child to attend.
Can you tutor my child with a disability?
There are many disabilities with varying levels of disorder. We always recommend that you seek professional advice on this question first, however we have taught students with many disabilities and have several teachers who have experience of working with children with specific learning disorders.
Will you come to my house to tutor?
All tutoring is done within our Centre. This gives us the ability to provide the best facilities and teaching aids to meet the needs of your child and creates an optimal learning environment.
How does the initial assessment work?
Many parents are concerned about how their children are performing at school and whether their children are at the appropriate level for their age and class. We set them some age appropriate tasks, in reading, writing and maths adapting them if necessary to ensure they don’t feel overwhelmed. After the tasks are completed, we discuss with you how your child has performed and how we can best support and extend their learning and confidence. We use the assessment data and any information from our discussion to produce your child’s individual learning program that they will follow each session.
How long is each lesson?
Lessons are 80 minutes long and pupils attend for one lesson a week. Some older children do attend more often, according to their needs. Even young children attend for 80 minutes - their lessons are broken up into shorter activities, designed to keep them keen and interested.
What times are the lessons held?
We are open after school Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings. There are a variety of lesson times available to suit you and your child's activities. Please contact us to discuss your needs.
Will my child get homework?
Homework is an essential part of the Kip McGrath program. We are aware of each pupil's school workload so set homework is generally limited to around half an hour each week. If you have difficulty getting your child to complete the homework, please contact us immediately.
How should I help my child while at Kip McGrath?
Let your child’s teacher know that they are attending as we are always keen to work alongside your child’s school. If you have any documentation, such as IEP’s or targets, bring them along so we can also help your child to achieve their targets. Should you have any issues regarding your child do let us know so we can support you and your child in any way we can.
Each week, set aside a time and place for you and your child to go through their homework and inform us of any issues that may arise during this time. Ensure that your child attends their session every week and is punctual. Consistency is essential to improving your child’s confidence and attainment.
